Helen Keller: The Deafblind American author, activist and lecturer

Helen Adams Keller was an American author, activist and lecturer. She was the first deafblind person to graduate from college.

The story of how Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan, broke through the isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language, allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate, has become known worldwide through the dramatic depictions of the play The Miracle Worker.

What is less well known is how Keller's life developed after she completed her education. A prolific author, she was well traveled, and was outspoken in her opposition to war. She campaigned for women's suffrage, workers' rights and socialism, as well as many other progressive causes.

Here are her famous quotations:
  • "Do not think of today's failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourself a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere; and you will find a joy in overcoming obstacles."
  • "I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do."
  • "One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar."
  • "I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble."
  • "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision."

"One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar."

Famous Quotes from Napoleon Hill

One of the earliest producers of the modern genre of personal-success literature was Napoleon Hill. He is an American author who spent most of his effort on describing to his readers and students the paradox that "thoughts are things". "Think and Grow Rich" was his most famous work, and is considered as one of the best-selling books of all time. In America, Hill stated in his writings that people are free to believe what they want to believe, and this is what sets the United States apart from all other countries in the world. Hill's works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve" is one of Hill's hallmark expressions. How achievement actually occurs, and a formula for it that puts success in reach for the average person, were the promise of Hill's books.

Here are some of his famous quotes I have compiled:

  • "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve."
  • "Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success."
  • "Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit."
  • "Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you're ready or not, to put this plan into action."

"What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

Og Mandino: The Greatest Salesman in the World

Og Mandino was a "sales guru" and the author of the bestselling book The Greatest Salesman in the World. He remains one of the most inspirational and best-selling authors today. His books have sold over 50 million copies and have been translated into over twenty-five different languages. He was the president of Success Unlimited magazine until 1976. He had been inducted into the National Speakers Association's Hall Of Fame.

According to the 1930 U.S. Census, Mandino was named after his paternal grandfather. His nickname Og was derived from his full name, Augustino Mandino. Mandino eventually became a successful writer. His works were inspired by the Bible and influenced by Napoleon Hill, W. Clement Stone, and Emmet Fox. Mandino was once the editor of a high school paper and planned to attend the University of Missouri, a journalism school. But in the summer of 1940, before Mandino was able to enter college, his mother died suddenly from a massive heart attack. This happened while Mandino's mother was in the kitchen preparing his lunch. After the incident, Mandino decided to work in a paper factory until 1942. Afterwards, Mandino joined the United States Army Air Corps where he became a military officer and a bombadier. He flew for thirty bombing missions over Germany on board a B-24 Liberator during World War II. It was also during this time that Mandino flew with fellow pilot and movie star, Jimmy Stewart. Mandino kept a personalized 8 X 10 photograph of Stewart. This photograph hung on the wall of his home office where he wrote his books.

After his military duties, Mandino discovered that many companies were not hiring many former bomber pilots. As a result, he became an insurance salesman. Traveling on the road and sitting in bars at night, Mandino became an alcoholic. He was unable to keep a job. As a result, Mandino's wife, together with their only child, left him. One wintry November morning in Cleveland, Mandino almost tried to commit suicide. But as he sorted through several books in a library, volumes of self-help, success and motivation books captured Mandino's attention. He selected some titles, went to a table and began reading. Mandino followed his visit to the library with more visits to many other libraries around the United States. He read hundreds of books that dealt with success, a pastime that help him alleviate his alcoholism. It was in a library in Concord, New Hampshire, where he found W. Clement Stone's classic, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude, a book that changed Mandino for the better.

Og Mandino's famous lines:
  • A day merely survived is no cause for celebration. You are not here to fritter away your precious hours when you have the ability to accomplish so much by making a slight change in your routine.
  • Action will destroy your procrastination.
  • To be always intending to make a new and better life but never to find time to set about it is as to put off eating and drinking and sleeping from one day to the next until you're dead.
  • "It is those who concentrate on but one thing at a time who advance in this world. The great man or woman is the one who never steps outside his or her specialty or foolishly dissipates his or her individuality."
  • The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting goals and achieving them. Even the most tedious chore will become endurable as you parade through each day convinced that every task, no matter how menial or boring, brings you closer to fulfilling your dreams.

“Action will destroy your procrastination.”

India's "Father of the Nation" & his famous quotes

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, more commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. He was the pioneer of Satyagraha—a philosophy that is largely concerned with truth and 'resistance to evil through active, non-violent resistance'—which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi is commonly known in India and across the world as the Mahatma (Sanskrit: mahātmā — "Great Soul" - an epithet given by Tagore) and as Bapu (Gujarati: bāpu—"Father"). In India, he is officially accorded the honour of Father of the Nation and October 2, his birthday, is commemorated each year as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday. On 15 June 2007, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution declaring October 2 to be the "International Day of Non-Violence."

Here are his popular quotations:

  • "We must become the change we want to see."
  • "Indolence is a delightful but distressing state; we must be doing something to be happy."
  • You may never know what result comes of your action, but if you do nothing there will be no result.
  • The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.
  • Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn’t have it in the beginning.

"We must become the change we want to see."

An Iota of Interest

Many people are getting hooked with this blogging or blog thing and I consider myself as one of them. I have visited many blogs of different interests before and have read their contents. Some were good, others were not that pleasing and some were simply made just to earn an extra income out of this amazing creation (hmmm.. what do you think???).

Each blogger has its own way or strategy on how to make the blog attractive and more interesting to read. I said to myself that I'll be making my own blog someday. At last, after months of long wait, the poor internet connection in my workplace has pushed me or motivated me to create a blog. Hahah! What an irony?! Well, I guess I should not waste my time chatting with my busy fellows in the office every time we experience this internet connection problems or any other interruptions. Making my own blog is definitely the key to drive away the upset and boring moments.

This is the first time that I'll be creating a blog and this is my first post. Expect for more blog posts here that features any topic under the sun. :-)
